Healthy eating begins in the shopping aisle
Looking for ways to improve your eating habits? The weekly grocery shop is often overlooked, but it can be a great way to give you and your family a healthy head start. Here's how:
Outline your meals for the week and write a shopping list. This will help you save time and money.
Fill your trolley with the basics
Fill your trolley with fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, lean meats, legumes and low fat dairy. You and your family will be ahead by basing your meals and snacks around these nutritious foods. You can save money by bulk buying non-perishable items like rice, pasta and canned vegetables (choose 'no added salt' varieties).
For fresh produce choose what's in season for best quality, taste and price. And don't forget canned and frozen vegetables, they are handy to have at home, offer year round availability and can be as nutritious as fresh.
Look at the labels
Choosing healthier foods can be overwhelming, but the nutrition information and claims on pack can help. Look for nutrition claims including serves of vegetables, source of fibre, salt reduced and at least 97% fat free. The Nutrition Information Panel and Daily Intake Guide can also help.
Shop when you're satisfied
It helps to avoid grocery shopping on an empty stomach. That way you are more likely to be in control of what you add to your trolley. You'll probably buy less, especially those items you and your family would be better off skipping.
